Lion and Wildebeest Kill (2013)

$20000 USD
We got to know this lion at Gol Kopje in the Serengeti on more than one visit. We nick-named him Rod Stewart because of the arrangement of his mane. Here he is feeding on a wildebeest. I decided to render him in graphite on gessoed canvas. This technique allows me to play with pencil and graphite sticks. I am always changing my mind as I work but one cannot erase on gesso. One can, however, scratch through the graphite and even scrub with steel wool and soap and water. Obviously I was having fun with the textures of the anatomy.
