2013 AFC Festival Photo Blog

This past fall, AFC launched the 3rd annual Artists for Conservation Festival, celebrating nature's beauty and diversity with a spectacular art exhibit and a host of inspiring art and environmental education programs. The event welcomed public of all ages with a variety of interests - fine art, environment and conservation. It also brought together over forty AFC artists, a small army of dedicated volunteers, and supporters including RE/MAX, Deeley Harley Davidson Canada, our gracious host, Grouse Mountain and many other supporters and patrons.

AFC Artist Pat Latas of Tucson, Arizona to Study and Support Plight of Flightless Parrot. The primary goal of the expedition is to illustrate and support the efforts of the Kakapo Recovery Team - a conservation organization whose mission it is to save the Kakapo- a flightless species of parrot that lives in burrows in New Zealand.

 

AFC Marine Explorer Shares Experience with Irish Youth

Whilst undertaking my scuba training course in Ireland, the new trainees were constantly reassured to the benefits of diving in our little country. They don't sound too alluring.....wet and windy conditions, fast flowing currents, icy cold temperatures, poor visibility (sometimes needing to be measured in inches rather than metres!), risk of separation from your buddy as well as the boat and the extra complication of having to dive in a dry suit!

AFC Artists Return from Successful Pilot Marine Explorers Program to Cayman Islands

On May 5, seven AFC members began jointly exploring the diverse and spectacular marine life of the southwestern Caribbean island of Grand Cayman with a goal to support its protection. Our expedition was particularly significant as it represented the launch of the new AFC "Marine Explorers" program aimed at supporting marine conservation and inspiring more artist involvement and depiction of marine wildlife.

A wave of bylaws banning the possession, trade, sale and distribution of shark fin products, has swept across the province of British Columbia this past month. North Vancouver joined Port Moody and Coquitlam in introducing a ban on shark fin soup in restaurants, a popular Asian dish that supports a vast industry that is decimating shark populations worldwide and threatens many species with extinction.
